Cornell has an optional cutter available for most solids handling pumps. The possibility also exists to retrofit the cutter to existing installations. At the end of last year, Aquator’s client chose to take up this option and had a first 8NNT fitted with a blade cutter. The results were immediately evident. After the first project - 600 mm diameter sewage line with nominal flow of 100 liter/sec – the users were so convinced in the effectiveness of the design that they have decided to modify the other pumps as well.

"One of our major customers, an international processor of potato products, is always looking to improve its production processes. The reduction of product damage is an issue which is always high on their agenda. Every year, huge quantities of potatoes are transported internally around the processing plant, each percentage of product that is damaged corresponds to hundreds of thousands of euros lost in the process" said Wim van der Giessen, CEO of the company.

The Challenge: The moment that a potato passes through the pump...
In order to transport the potatoes around the processing plant, special pumps are used with large quantities of water acting as the transport medium, this is known as Hydro transport. You can imagine that nothing exciting happens in the pipes when the recommended fluid velocity and installation instructions are correctly followed. But, as soon as a potato passes through the pump, then a temporary "stress" is created, due to pressure differences, a reduction in the pipe diameter and of course, the rotating pump impeller. How can you avoid product damage under such conditions?

The Solution: Testing different brands of pumps for optimized production
Wim van der Giessen continues: "We were asked by our client to try three different brands of pumps in the same production line, this way they could test and study which pump design creates the least damage to the product.

It was a good job for us, as we had to change the piping, frames and engine speeds for each of the various pump brands, so a reliable comparison between each pump could be made."

"After the test, there was a clear winner, the Cornell pump with the offset volute (PP series) came out on top in the test with less than 2% of product damage! This has resulted in us replacing almost all of the clients pumps with the Cornell hydro transport pumps. Since then we only offer Cornell pumps for new applications. Fortunately, the Cornell pumps are now also available in 304 stainless steel, which again fits in well with our core business," said Wim.

The 43-metre long razor shell dredger is the flagship of the Dutch shipyard and best demonstrates the constant innovation delivered by the shipping sector in order to meet the continually changing needs of the modern fishing industry.

“We are delighted to have had the opportunity to build such a cutting-edge vessel,” says Maaskant director Frits van Dongen. "The YE 118 is the first shellfish dredger able to fish for razor clams down to a depth of 25 meters. This is only possible due to the advanced pumping system in use." 

How it works

There are a number of challenges facing the razor shell fishing sector – perhaps the most pertinent is being able to harvest an undamaged product. This is due to the fact that razor shells are fragile and thus easily broken. Once on board, the next task is to keep the catch alive and healthy as razor shells are a particularly sensitive species.

The new vessel has a basket that is lowered over the vessel’s port side. Once in position, the gear is pulled along the seabed at a speed of 0.3 knots. A water jet pump loosens the sand on the seabed and this loosened mixture of sand, water and razor shells is then pumped on board through a Cornell 12NHPP hydro transport pump. The unique design of this big 12" food pump takes into account the delicate structure of the product.

Using apparatus developed by the client’s extensive experience in the industry, the catch then is sorted to remove broken and empty shells. The sorted razor shells are then transferred to mid-ship holding tubs. To keep the catch in optimum condition, these tubs receive a constant supply of fresh seawater from an additional pump system.

Technical feature: Pumping Hot Cooking Oil

We often receive queries from the pump industry about Cornell hot cooking oil pumps. For some reason these pumps always hold a special attraction to people who have a technical mind-set. Or maybe it's just because of the end product – fried snack foods...

Cornell has been producing a wonderful series of pumps for this application since the nineteen eighties. Therefore, I felt it was time to write a technical feature of the most important characteristics of a hot cooking oil pump.

The problem

When fresh products are immersed in hot cooking oil during the frying process, water vapors are released from the product into the oil changing its consistency and temperature. This temperature and liquid property transition requires the oil to be circulated through the fryer and a heat exchanger.

Obviously, at a temperature of 180° Celsius or more, the cooking oil can't be pumped using a standard centrifugal pump. In addition to sealing issues there are several other technical challenges which need to be resolved in order to guarantee a reliable pump system. During the pumping process water in liquid form travels along the bottom of the fryer until it reaches the pump suction, the action of the impeller breaks up the water into smaller droplets that flash into steam. This presence of steam doesn’t just cause damage to the pumps through the possibility of cavitation, the resulting turbulence and vibrations are also detrimental to the pumps performance.

The solution

Firstly, selecting the right pump is of vital importance. A cooking oil pump obviously has to cover the system curve, providing the lowest possible NPSHr. This is why in practice cooking oil pumps generally work a little to the left of the BEP – Best Efficiency Point.

In addition, Cornell Pumps has developed several technical innovations which reduce the chance of cavitation or other pump damage to practically zero:

Anti-cavitation system, here a small amount of oil circulates back to the heart of the impeller through the vapor suppression line. The high pressure jet into the impeller eye suppresses the vapor bubbles until they have passed through the pump.

External balance system, this ensures that any build-up of debris around the shaft sealing is transported to the suction side of the pump to prevent damage to the mechanical seal. In addition, Cornell’s external balance line equalizes pressure between the impeller hub area and the pump suction to reduce axial loading action on the impeller, shaft and bearings.

609S ʺOʺ Seat Mechanical Seal, as standard, Cornell uses a shaft sealing which is suitable for cooking oil temperatures of up to 200° Celsius without the need to install external cooling systems.

For extremely high temperatures there is the option to add a water-cooled mechanical seal that can withstand oil temperatures of up to 288° Celsius.      

The result

The only thing that counts is the result; users in the snack and food industry often work in shift rotations, and they don't want to worry about the technical side of installations and pumping systems. There are now countless Cornell hot cooking oil pumps running all over the world, whose users know that pump yield and up time are both at the maximum level. Down time simply isn't an option! 

The picture shows three pumps of the 8H-F18K type, these are the largest hot cooking oil pumps that Cornell has in its range. These units will be used in a new project in which the operating capacity will be 770 m3/h @ 40 mwc. With an efficiency of up to 88%, the motors power is limited to 90 kW.

Yerseke has been a typical Dutch fishing village since the 15th century, it’s a place where you can fully experience and taste the fishing life. Fishing for mussels and oysters is an important source of income here, and it also plays a major role at a national level. Potappel Techniek - a local company specialised in pumps and pumping systems - recently installed a Cornell 4STX on board the YE-84 fishing vessel in order to pump out bilge water from 3 different holds. This was particularly exciting, because a Cornell self-priming pump had never been used in Europe before. 

The Challenge 

The main challenge was the existing pipe system aboard the vessel; with long suction lines with sharp bends and just a very short discharge pipeline. "From installation point of view this is always tricky", according to Wouter Potappel, owner of Potappel Techniek. "In addition to these complications, we were also dealing with the issue that only air was being sucked at the end of the pumping cycle." The skipper, Dick Moerland, stated that they had tried several pumps, but encountered the same problems over and over again, the mechanical seals quickly broke down. "In one instance the seal only lasted for a single day", says Dick.

Some of the important factors that had to be taken into account when selecting a pump:

-           The pump should have good suction volume capacity and not be susceptible to cavitation;

-           The pump should be capable of running dry for short periods of time;

-           The Oosterschelde tidal basin (part of the North Sea) is a salt water environment and some dirt will obviously be sucked in from time to time;

-           Capacity isn't a major concern, 100m3/hr is more than enough. 

The Solution

In 2013, Cornell globally launched a series of self-priming pumps. This passed without too much initial attention in Europe, but the specific characteristics of the Cornell 4STX now offered the perfect solution to the user’s specific challenge. The large, completely ductile iron pump casing delivers good suction capabilities and is untroubled by the mixture of air and water. Cornell uses the well-known Cycloseal® system for the mechanical seal - this makes the pump resistant to running dry.

The Result

To best understand the results for yourself we have made a video and posted it on YouTube so you can see and hear just how quietly the pump runs. No sounds of cavitation and no vibrations, according to a satisfied skipper who can now go back to fishing for oysters without any cares!  "The pump runs incredibly quietly, you just don't hear it, unlike the other pumps we have tried." "The Cornell processes a lot of water even though it only has a small electric engine - the holds aboard are empty in no time!"

Based on this success, Cornell Pumps Europe has made the decision to include the STX-series in the European stock program and according to the Product Manager Henno Schothorst: "These self-priming wastewater pumps have so many purposes that we see an exciting range of diverse applications. For example, these pumps are also installed in sewer systems all over the world."

With the “flooded excavation principle”, the construction site is flooded after the retaining walls have been installed (e.g. sheet pile). When the excavation is in layered soils facing artesian pressure and confining layers , the weight of the water compensates for the topsoil being removed and prevents failure of the base of the excavation. Particularly when it is difficult to install pump systems, or when reducing the artesian pressure is impossible or undesirable due to other factors, the flooded excavation may be the easiest option. 

Rather than with earthmoving equipment, the actual digging is done with a Damen submersible (DOP) pump that is suspended from an excavator or crane. By installing jetting nozzles on the submersible pump the soil is agitated, creating a slurry that can be pumped away, thereby digging out the soil. When the intended depth is reached, underwater concrete is poured to create a watertight base that will create a caisson in combination with the retaining walls already installed. 

Although a niche market, this dredging technology offers many benefits in specific situations. Is the method requires a minimum amount of earth moving equipment the excavation can be done quickly and safely without any major disruptions to day-to-day life in the city. 

In the pictures you see a perfect example of such a project being conducted in the port area of Copenhagen (Denmark). In order to install a three story parking basement the contractor is excavating down to a level of ten meters below sea level. The jetting pump used to power the nozzles is a purpose built Cornell 8NHG19-F18DB high head pump.

This high-powered Redi-prime pump will run at a staggering efficiency rate of 82% in the duty point of 1000 m3/h at 10 bar. The priming system was specifically designed with the environment in mind. By using a positive sealing float box and a diaphragm vacuum pump, there is absolutely no water carry-over to contaminate the environment.

This high-powered jetting pump will run at a staggering efficiency rate of 82% in the duty point and is powered by the cleanest Stage IV final diesel engine in its class: The Volvo Penta TAD1375VE with an AdBlue after treatment system. The unit is supplied in the latest BBA super silent canopy and is fitted with all bells and whistles such as remote control, integrated flood lights, certified lifting points and LCD CAN-BUS control panel.

Although a niche market, this dredging technology offers many benefits in specific situations. As the method requires a minimum amount of earth moving equipment the excavation can be done quickly and safely without any major disruptions to day-to-day life in the city.

The Challenge

The company constantly strives to take the lead with innovative ideas. Bert-Jan Verboom visited the Agritechnica show in Hannover to research possible new ways to improve his umbilical pumping system. In doing so he encountered a slurry handling package from North America, standardized on a highly efficient Cornell pump driven by an engine without the need of a inefficient gearbox. 

In September 2014 Bert-Jan had a meeting with Henno Schothorst - product manager at Cornell Pumps Europe - to choose which pump (4NHTB or 6NHTB) would work best with the hoses in use. The final choice was for the 4NHTB. This 4ʺ pump delivers over 400 m3/hour and has a head of maximum 140mwc. 

"Every advantage has its disadvantage", according to Bert-Jan Verboom. "The purchase price of the American pump is quite serious, but then the higher pump efficiency and its durability will quickly offset the costs." 

Results after one manure season

"Without using a calculator I can already see the advantages," Bert-Jan says. "The most remarkable of which is that the pump already has an extremely high flow even at a low rpm. We fill around 200 cubic meters per hour at an idling speed. Once the unit is pressurized, we only need 1750 rpm. Theoretically that accounts for savings of 8-10 liters of fuel consumption per hour” “Although I don't really notice it in the field, livestock farmers are also very happy about the reduced noise levels. Another obviously positive aspect is the size of the particles that the pump can process. Every now and then I find pretty large pieces of plastic and hoof blocks. The diameter of 76 mm is much larger than what we were previously used to.”

A Cornell high volume jet water pump has been working on board of a sand dredger, belonging to the Dutch company De Vries & van de Wiel, since May 2010. This big 20" pump has worked flawlessly without significant maintenance since the first commissioning. 

After more than 10,000 hours of reliable service, the drive - a powerful V12 diesel engine - needed a complete overhaul. During this work BBA Pumps was requested to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the pump that has been operating routinely over its maximum allowable speed. 

Joop Buitenhuis, a field service engineer with BBA Pumps, carried out the inspection job on board the vessel, together with an employee of De Vries & van de Wiel. The pump volute weighing nearly two thousand kilograms was removed in order to have a good view of the wearing parts. The special heat-treated stainless steel wear rings and ductile iron impeller showed minimal wear and tear, even the Cycloseal®  sealing system  was not yet in need of replacement. 

According to Joop, the pump can run at least a few years more before the first components need to be replaced. "the high pump efficiency of 86% has also contributed to the good condition of the pump," said Joop. "As a result, the axial and radial forces on the turning parts are very well balanced and that contributes to their extended working life".

The pump must be located sufficiently below the liquid level in the suction bay to ensure that adequate suction head is maintained. The vortex should draw the product uniformly into the pump’s suction. Product vortexing is especially important with light foods that normally float.

In addition, the vortex—which should be limited to minimize air entrainment—causes long foods, such as string beans, to enter the stream with their length parallel to the flow. The pump must have an adequate and uniform supply of water to minimize loss of prime and prevent surge.

The fourth annual Product Innovation of the Year, judged by Pumps & Systems magazine, was hotly contested. Dozens of innovative products vied for the distinction of being Product of the Year, and Clackamas-based Cornell Pump Company’s Cutter Pump was judged to be best of the worldwide entries—the last three contests were won by companies based in Denmark,Ohio, and Germany. 

Cornell won for its innovative cutter pump that addresses an issue plaguing every waste water treatment system inNorth America—fouled impellers. Cornell created an innovative cutter design, using a stationary and rotating element to reduce masses of solids to a size that will pass through the pump. Less impeller fouling means a dramatic increase in up-time for the pump; in tests of the cutters, savings of more than € 23.000,– per pump installed have been seen. With many municipalities employing dozens or hundreds of pumps in their systems, the savings can be truly dramatic. 

Cornell’s Cutter Pump was award the prize because of the innovative design that took minimal energy consumption—many installations still operate at 80 percent efficiency. The review group was also impressed at how effectively the cutters worked at breaking up the clogs. The first part of the evaluation should focus on determining the appropriate line size, which will allow the engineer to design a system with optimum line velocity. Water volume should be determined in cubic meters per hour/min. This is accomplished by determining the product to be transported in kilograms per minute. Then the recommended volume-to-product ratio is applied, which provides the designer with an equivalent volume of water. The water-to-product ratio should be as great as economically possible and should vary depending on the type of food being transported. Traditionally, highly sensitive products require a greater water-to-product ratio. The piping configuration should be designed to maintain optimum line velocities to prevent the product from falling out of suspension, dragging along the bottom of the pipe or stacking up. High line velocities should also be avoided to reduce product impact. Short radius ells, rough pipe joints or heads inside the welded pipe can cause more damage to the product than the pump.
